We Don’t have to Take Their Advice, Even if We Love Them.

Updated: Jun 15, 2020

I am an advice-seeker by nature.

It’s hard for me to make decisions without checking it over with other people. I really like to hear validation that what I’m thinking is smart, wise and a good choice.

Who doesn’t like to hear that?

The thing is, though, we actually should be careful whose advice we are taking.

All too often I’ve accepted some very ungodly advice.

I’ve done things (or refused to do things) that sounded like a good idea but actually didn’t align with the Father’s heart... because someone suggested it.

And that’s no ones fault but my own.

Because we personally each have the responsibility to consider the source we are going to.

Think about it for a moment.

Have you ever had a dream in your heart that was shot down by someone because they said it didn’t make sense?

Or pushed in a certain direction because they saw it as the best way, even though the Lord was calling you to something different?

Have you ever felt excited about something until you asked others if they thought it was a good idea, and then decided against in when they said “no”?

Here’s the thing... we don’t have to take everyone’s advice.

Even if we really love them.

Even if they are wonderful humans.

Because no one else knows your future.

They don’t know Gods plan for your life.

They don’t have that kind of information.

I would also say that it’s important to have godly people in your life who are open to the fact that they cannot say for sure what you should do (unless it’s something that would hurt you, or others, or go directly against God’s will).

Someone who really understands how God works won’t tell you to only be “logical”, because they’ll know that sometimes God calls us to do things that doesn’t necessarily make sense.

We all need people like that in our lives. The ones who are open to God doing bigger than we think possible.

But ultimately, the first place you should seek advice is the Lord Himself.

He wants to lead you.

He wants to give you guidance and clarity.

He is a God who walks the whole process with us.

So if you are trying to make a decision...

Or if you are wanting to pivot in life...

Or perhaps you have a calling on your heart...

Be careful who you let speak into it.

Be careful who you decide knows what’s best.

Be open to opinions, sure.

But don’t take anyone else’s opinion over God’s nudges and whispers in your life.

He totally and completely knows best.
